“Never has a sinless child been born to its mother” – Toynbee quoting Archbishop William Temple. This is one of the great challenges to belief in the Christian idea of original sin – that children are born with sin. One feels that Archbishop Temple, and the churchmen like him who developed this idea, had no contact with newborn babies. That one’s tiny little baby can be considered to be blackened by sin is an affront to normal instincts.
