East vs West

“One can contemplate, for an exercise, orientalism in Britain and materialism in Japan, or enterprise in Singapore and traditionalism in London. Or one could ask who, at the time of the Suez crisis, was the bigger crackpot, Nasser or Eden? One might wonder what kind of job Whitehall would have made of the mess Sukarno left  behind him: would it have done as well as General Suharto? Or one might imagine Lee Kuan Yew as leader of the British labor Party: with the resources he would then possess, might he not do a better job than Harold Wilson? How would the Lord Mayor of Birmingham make out if he were Prime Minister of Laos which, in numbers, has much the same population? Compare and contrast Westminster abbey and Bangkok’s Temple of the Emerald Buddha, or the rale of King Phumiphon wth that of Queen Elizabeth”
