Intellectual women

“Within a general Australian anti-intellectualism, women who harbour longings for a stimulating world between hard-covers suffer more because such abstract ardour is patently incompatible with the concrete demands of being a wife and mother. Intellectual women, that is to say, women who translate their intelligence into carefully formulated opinions or Utopian longings, have been and remain objects terrify men, even intellectual men (for their claim to merit is then not unique) and are automatically exiled from an easy friendship with other women.
