Women’s role in wartime

“It’s only the men who talk about glory, Polly thought. They have it easy. All they have to do is to ride out – and die. A little puff of flame from a musket and some pain, maybe even bad pain, but over in a little while; then the dark and the quiet. But they don’t have to wait and die inside their bodies a thousand times and come alive with hope and die again with despair. I don’t think they could do it, these little boys talking about glory and playing soldier.”

from Frank Yerby, “Bride of Liberty”  (recorded 29/11/1976)
