An older mother’s view of her new baby

“Thankyou Lord, for this little one you have blessed me with

So late in life.

I thought I had finished with four-hourly feeds,

Nappies,

Three-month colic,

Immunisation, teething problems …

All those ‘fringe-benefits’ that come with babies.

But here I am,

Up to my eyes in them.

After eight years, we’re starting all over again …

I feel young again, Lord.

What nicer thing could happen to a woman almost forty?

Knowing this is my last child makes me exquisitely aware of every moment.

Thankyou once more for letting me be a mother.

I would not have missed it for the world.”

  2. This is incredible. Thank you for sharing it! There are tears in my eyes as I give silent thanks to my mother, now passed, who had me at 39… and she told me that when people playfully called me her ‘little accident’ she always corrected them, that she had really wanted me. Your poem is powerfully moving. Thanks again.
    With blessings and gratitude, Gina
