The balance between Federal and State powers

“Radicals really must face the contradictions in their thinking; if they wish to increase Federal power at the expense of State power as a means of defeating local reactionaries, let them recall that Federal power is itself a two-edged sword, and that, as any Vietnamese peasant might testify, it is not the reactionaries who are apt to feel its sharpest edge. …The remedy for radicals is not to support a Federal power they cannot control, but to create an alternative and localised power structure that they can.”

= John Papworth ‘The End of the American Dream’
