How do men get better jobs than women do?

“…the segregation of the labour force is founded on the fact that men will generally require and fight harder for higher wages and better jobs than women will. Capital can use this deeply differentiated workforce in different ways. It can divert men into the more skilled jobs and women into the less skilled. It can maintain whole industries – such as the clothing industry – on the basis of a workforce that will not be demanding a family wage.

-Ann Curthoys in ‘Refractory Girl’ (quoted in Tribute 7/10/1981)

One could comment that, in Australia, we have since lost our clothing and footwear industries mainly to Asian factories, apart from the backyard sweatshops.
